Tottenham missed Maddison sorely. During the 2024/25 campaign, Maddison scored 12 goals and claimed 11 assists from 45 appearances as Ange Postecoglou’s won the Europa League.

Now, after survival was secured with a 1-0 win over Everton on the final day of the season, Maddison has made an intriguing claim about the preparation Tottenham did ahead of the match.

James Maddison on how Tottenham prepared for survival showdown

Last season, Tottenham got a little bit lucky with the relegation fight. The three promoted sides were pretty useless, and as a result, Spurs kind of forfeited some Premier League games to focus on winning in Europe.

Clearly, it worked as Tottenham lifted the Europa League trophy but this season has been a struggle, with West Ham going down on 39 points in the end.

Maddison has explained that Tottenham prepared more for Sunday’s game than they did for the Europa League final 12 months ago.

He said on TalkSPORT: “A few people were questioning why we were celebrating. We weren’t celebrating in joy and happiness, it was relief.

“We prepared for it like we prepared for the Europa League final, if not more!.

“The fun police come out and have a little bit of a go, but it was more relief just the fact we managed to dig deep and get that last win”

Maddison’s comments show that Tottenham were up for the fight and once the team got key players back, they were able to stay up pretty comfortably.

Next season could be a brilliant comeback campaign for Maddison and Tottenham need him to be firing on all cylinders as Roberto De Zerbi looks to move the club forward.
