James Maddison broke the silence of Tottenham Hotspur’s players by sending a message to the club’s supporters following the 3-2 defeat at Brighton.
Spurs suffered an inexcusable collapse on the south coast as they relinquished a two-goal lead at half-time to suffer their third defeat of the new campaign. Goals from Brennan Johnson and Maddison gave them the lead going into the break, however, the second 45 minutes followed a very different script.
As soon as Yankuba Minteh found the back of the net, Spurs seemed to lose all composure. Just 18 minutes later, Tottenham found themselves behind as Georginio Rutter and Danny Welbeck also grabbed goals.
Maddison has now sent a promise to the North London club’s supporters following the defeat and is the only player to have posted about the defeat at the Amex Stadium.

James Maddison’s promise to Tottenham fans
Maddison has promised the players will take full responsibility for the loss at Brighton and use it as motivation to make sure it doesn’t happen again. The Tottenham vice-captain claims that it is unacceptable the way the team fell apart in the second-half.
Maddison wrote on his Instagram story: “Yesterday’s second half was unacceptable. We take full responsibility and criticism and will use it as fuel to move forward.”
It’s tricky to make sense of what happened after half-time at the Amex, Ange Postecoglou’s team had been playing so well up until that point, except for maybe there being a lack of leaders on the pitch.
This is not the first time Tottenham have surrendered a lead with this group of players or looked to have completely lost their heads. When Brighton’s first goal went in, someone needed to step up and restore some composure amongst the players.
Tottenham’s back four were particularly poor with Destiny Udogie having a torrid afternoon against the Seagulls as the Italian was partly at fault for all three goals. Meanwhile, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven also looked well off it against Brighton as Spurs suffered one of their worst defeat under Postecoglou.

Tottenham’s first-half vs second-half stats against Brighton
Tottenham actually had more possession, attempts at goal and passes made in the second 45, the difference being, that everything in the first-half was a lot more meaningful.
Postecoglou’s team never looked like they were going to score in the second period and their attackers ended up looking like passengers.
| First-half | Second-half | |
| Possession | 57% | 61% |
| xG | 0.92 | 0.43 |
| xG conceded | 0.62 | 1.14 |
| Big chances | 1 | 0 |
| Shots | 6 | 7 |
| Passes | 257 | 269 |
The Australian boss must now find a way to avoid his team suffering such collapses in games as they did against Brighton on Sunday afternoon.
