There are some concerns that Cristian Romero might have damaged his MCL, with further tests set to determine how many weeks he could miss for Tottenham.

Romero collided with Antonin Kinsky towards the end of Spurs’ 1-0 defeat to Sunderland and left the field in tears, suggesting the injury could be quite serious.

Gaston Edul has reported that the Argentine defender is due to undergo tests as he is in pain and to determine whether he has damaged his MCL.

The hope would be that it is just a bone bruise, but a more serious injury involving the ligaments could put his World Cup hopes in jeopardy.

Cristian Romero could have suffered MCL injury

Cristian Romero could have suffered an MCL injury as the Tottenham defender’s knee fell into a valgus position, according to Physio Scout.

The 27-year-old was spotted palpating the inner side of his knee, which further suggests he could have damaged the MCL.

In terms of what could be the best-case scenario, it is that Romero has only suffered a bone bruise or a low-grade MCL injury.

A Grade One MCL injury is one to three weeks out, a Grade Two MCL is four to six weeks, and a Grade Three is eight weeks plus.

Any sort of MCL injury and the defender’s season could be close to being over, but a more serious MCL injury could also end his World Cup hopes.

😡 VOTE for Tottenham’s WORST player vs Sunderland…

There are just over eight weeks until the competition in North America kicks off, so one of Argentina’s top players now faces a possible race against the clock to be fit.

There are six weeks until the final game of the season, and whether Romero would be willing to rush his return for Spurs feels unlikely at this stage.

Romero is expected to leave Tottenham in the summer, so it could also be the case that the defeat to Sunderland was his final game in a Spurs shirt.

Many Tottenham fans will be delighted to see Romero leave, given his poor discipline, which was once again on show against Sunderland.
