How the Italian media reacted to Guglielmo Vicario’s performance vs France as Tottenham keeper scores own goal and concedes three

Guglielmo Vicario had an evening to forget as the Tottenham Hotspur shot-stopper conceded three and scored an own goal as Italy lost 3-1 to France at San Siro.

Vicario was filling in for Gianluigi Donnarumma who was struggling with illness and the PSG man won’t be too worried by the prospect of losing his number one jersey long term.

Vicario has now conceded four goals in four appearances for the Azzurri and his latest display will leave supporters questioning Luciano Spalletti’s decision to pick him over Donnarumma.

Donnarumma started ahead of the 28-year-old in Italy’s other game over the international break in which they won 1-0 against Belgium.

Guglielmo Vicario’s nightmare evening vs France

Vicario had an evening to forget for the Italian national team as set pieces again caused him real trouble as France took full advantage of his biggest weakness.

The first was a corner where Adrien Rabiot was allowed a free header. France packed out the penalty area and whilst Vicario required help from his defence, he looked totally unsure whether to go for the ball or stay on his line.

Lucas Digne produced a sensational free-kick for Les Bleus’ second as his effort crashed off the crossbar and the rebound rather unfortunately struck the back of the keeper’s head and went in.

France’s third was another rather unfortunate goal for the Spurs man as Rabiot’s header looped over his head and in, and in truth, not many keepers would have saved it.

How the Italian media reacted to Guglielmo Vicario vs France

The consensus across the Italian media was that Vicario had quite an unlucky evening and there wasn’t a great deal he could do about the three goals.

Eurosport gave him a 5/10 writing: “On the occasion of the first goal of France he is blocked by the traffic of the small area, then he scores an own goal in an unfortunate manner on a wonderful free kick by Digne. He can do little about the third goal.”

5/10 was also given to him by Sky Sport: “Unlucky. Four times he is called into action and three times he is beaten. No glory, even if he gets there on Digne’s free kick, for the French double. But he only manages to touch it on the crossbar, before it bounces back on him.”

Football Italia were less impressed and handed him a four: “Another issue caused by a corner after two minutes for the Tottenham goalkeeper. Then an own-goal after a sweetly-struck Lucas Digne free-kick hit him on the rebound. Though it was always destined for the net, the Italy ‘keeper was a little across his line.”

The number 13 now has a lot of work to do to regain his place in the team as Vicario’s weakness at set pieces causes him major issues once again.
