Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has admitted he was left shocked by what he has saw from Tottenham Hotspur recently.
Ange Postecoglou’s side make a return to Premier League action this weekend with a game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spurs will be taking on Rob Edwards’ Luton Town as they aim to bounce back in style following a dismal defeat away to Fulham before the break.
And what Merson saw from Spurs prior to the international break left him stunned.
What shocked Paul Merson about Tottenham
Champions League football is the goal for Tottenham this season and they go into the weekend sitting three points adrift of Aston Villa – with a game in hand.
Before the game at Craven Cottage, Spurs emphatically beat Unai Emery’s side 4-0 at Villa Park to put themselves in the top four driving seat.
But they were very quickly brought back down to earth with their shock display against Fulham.
And Merson has told Sportskeeda that he cannot understand how Postecoglou’s men were able to drop their levels so much in such a short space of time.
He said: ‘How do you thrash Aston Villa 4-0 at Villa Park and then go on and get absolutely destroyed by Fulham the next game? Tottenham are yet another side that needs to find consistency. The final scoreline in that hammering they suffered at Craven Cottage could have been much worse than 3-0.
‘I think Spurs’ journey has been so topsy-turvy that its difficult to predict whether they’ll make it to the Champions League next season. Their home record is not great and inconsistency on your home turf is not a habit that teams that harbour Champions League aspirations can hope to accommodate.’

Paul Merson’s prediction for Tottenham vs Luton
It is a huge opportunity for Spurs to put things right on the weekend with after what has to be their most disappointing result of the season.
Had Spurs picked up three points at Craven Cottage, they would have come out of the international break in fourth spot and with a game in hand.
However, this was not the case with the players putting in hugely underwhelming displays on the bank of the Thames.
One player who was slammed by the media following the game was Destiny Udogie with Jamie Redknapp left baffled by some of his defending.
But Redknapp’s Sky Sports colleague, Merson, has predicted Spurs to bounce back in north London on Saturday.
‘Ange Postecoglou’s men are likely to bounce back this weekend. From Luton’s point of view, it’s going to be about damage limitation here when they visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday,’ he said as he predicted a 3-0 win for Spurs.
And that is exactly the type of result which Spurs fans will feel the club need on the back of the defeat to Fulham.
Fortunately, Spurs appear to have come out of the international break without any real further injury issues, but a big win would do wonders for the confidence in N17.
