Tottenham Hotspur’s current stance over whether to offer Heung-min Son a new contract has left the winger feeling pretty unhappy.

Son has entered the final year of his current deal at Spurs, although the North London club do have the option to extend it until the summer of 2026.

The winger is the Lilywhite’s second-longest current serving player behind Ben Davies, with Sonny now in his tenth season in North London.

However, aged 32 and his contract close to expiring, Tottenham have a big decision to make as to whether to proceed with him as a key part of their future.

Tottenham have no plans to offer Heung-min Son a new contract

The Spurs News exclusively spoke to transfer insider Graeme Bailey of TBR Football, who said that Tottenham have no current plans to offer Heung-min Son a new long-term contract.

Spurs will take up their option to extend his current deal until the summer of 2026, however, next season could be his last at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Talks over a new deal had taken place just after the arrival of Ange Postecoglou back in the summer of 2023 but have since stalled and the South Korean’s entourage are not happy with the situation.

Bailey told exclusively The Spurs News: “They were talking last year when Ange came in originally, that summer there was talk of a deal, Son came in centre-forward and captain – everything was pointing towards a new contract.

“But now we’re towards the point where Spurs will take the one-year extension option, however, Son’s people are now aware that there is no ongoing talks over a long-term deal. It’s not caught them by surprise as it’s been a long time coming but Son’s people are not particularly happy with how it’s been dealt with and how it’s come about.”

“I wouldn’t completely rule out a new contract because it’s Son and Spurs, but right now they are not looking to do it.”

Tottenham are well prepared for Heung-min Son’s departure

Tottenham believe they are well prepared for a future without Son given their exciting emerging talents in Mikey Moore, Wilson Odobert and Yang Min-hyeok.

Moore is the jewel of their academy whilst Yang, who arrives from Gangwon FC in January 2025, is seen as Son’s successor for both club and country.

Meanwhile, the likes of Dominic Solanke, Dejan Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson are all starting to step up to the mantle this season.

“From a Spurs point of view, and it’s more pressing than Salah, given he’s that little bit older, does he need another contract? From a business point of view, Spurs have to be realistic, they’ve just spent a lot of money on Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson is coming into his own, and Dejan Kulusevski is really kicking on, Spurs see a pathway without him,” added Bailey

“Why would you hand out multi-year contracts to ageing players when you’ve got young players like Kulusevski and Johnson, who are 24 and 23, Mikey Moore, Bergvall, Gray, it’s obviously the way they are going. It’s horrible but if Spurs fans can say goodbye to Harry Kane they certainly say goodbye to Son.”
