Tottenham Hotspur have done the best deal of the summer transfer window.

That’s according to a number of agents in the Premier League, who believe James Maddison’s move to North London was the best transfer of the summer.

Maddison had caught the eye of a number of top clubs in recent years as he consistently put on excellent performances for Leicester City, scoring ten goals and providing nine assists as they were relegated to the Championship last season.

While the Foxes had previously rejected a £50 million bid for the midfielder from Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur managed to land him for £10m less in June.

With only a year left on his contract at the King Power Stadium, Spurs were able to snap him up in a bargain deal as he committed to a five-year deal at the club.

Maddison has already proven his worth in Tottenham’s opening four fixtures, scoring twice and bagging two assists in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old has since received rave reviews from a number of agents, according to a survey conducted by The Athletic.

The sports website asked several agents from the 20 clubs in the Premier League what they thought was the best deal of the summer window and almost half answered with James Maddison.

What did the agents say about James Maddison?

Agent 1 said: “At that level, even before the season had started, I thought it was, pound for pound, the best deal. When you look at some of the transfer fees for players that aren’t even proven — look at Cole Palmer. I know they (Chelsea) are buying potential, but the guy has played about 15 league games and they’ve paid more for him than Spurs did for Maddison.”

Agent 2 said: “He stayed at Leicester too long but Spurs looks the right move for him. There’s a good buzz around Spurs under (Ange) Postecoglou, which wasn’t the case for a few seasons, and a player like Maddison should enjoy that. It’s a shame (Harry) Kane has left because they would have worked well together, but sometimes a change is good for everyone. Maddison looks re-energised. And from a Spurs point of view, it was a good deal at a really good price.”

While Maddison doesn’t have Kane in front of him, the England international should be boosted by the arrival of Brennan Johnson. The former Nottingham Forest forward is a ‘replacement’ for the former Tottenham No.9 and will be eager to form a brilliant partnership with his teammate.
