Gary Neville blasts Liverpool’s ‘dangerous’ response to Spurs VAR controversy

Tottenham beat Liverpool 2-1 on the weekend in the Premier League but there was a lot of VAR controversy and pundit Gary Neville has spoken out following a statement by Liverpool.

Tottenham were somewhat lucky despite picking up the win as a few key decisions went their way on the weekend. One was a Liverpool goal which was deemed offside but it was not and it saw PGMOL issue an apology over the decision.

Gary Neville slates Liverpool statement after Spurs loss

The pundit went to social media application X, formerly Twitter to give his view on the statement released by Liverpool.

Neville said: “Jurgen Klopp handled the situation well last night after the game. Most football fans will have had empathy with what happened and recognised it was wrong!

“However Liverpools statement tonight is a mistake! Talk of exploring all options (what does that mean!!!) and sporting integrity are dangerous phrases along with being vague and aggressive.

“Sorry was enough!! I said this last night. Sorry should be respected and not undervalued. This is a snap reaction that can always be wrong but I feel strongly about it.”

How did Liverpool respond to VAR error vs Spurs?

Liverpool reacted with a statement and pundit Gary Neville does not believe this statement was the best way to go.

Within the statement, Liverpool said: “We fully accept the pressures that match officials work under but these pressures are supposed to be alleviated, not exacerbated, by the existence and implementation of VAR.

“It is therefore unsatisfactory that sufficient time was not afforded to allow the correct decision to be made and that there was no subsequent intervention.

“That such failings have already been categorised as “significant human error” is also unacceptable. Any and all outcomes should be established only by the review and with full transparency.”

The win sees Tottenham now sit second in the Premier League and they are still undefeated. Manager Ange Postecoglou has done a great job since joining this summer.

You can see why Liverpool were frustrated but there have been many poor decisions going against many clubs, including Spurs, so it is hard to talk about exploring all options for one specific decision. Despite this, Spurs still performed well, with players like James Maddison impressing.

What was PGMOL’s response to Liverpool vs Spurs VAR error

Following the goal being dissallowed, PGMOL were very quick to issue a response detailing the mistake they made.

Within the response to the VAR error they made in the match, PGMOL said: “PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool. The goal by Luis Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials.

“This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene. PGMOL will conduct a full review into the circumstances which led to the error.”

It was a mess on the weekend by the referees and hopefully they now work on improving them instead of focusing on the past.

Now, Tottenham need to make sure that they push on with their impressive start to the Premier League season. They have had a very good start and Postecoglou will be hoping that it keeps on going.
