Tottenham Hotspur suffered a difficult Sunday afternoon but one former Spurs goalkeeper became a hero in bizarre circumstances.

Sunday’s trip to Brighton and Hove Albion is one day many Tottenham Hotspur fans will want to forget rather quickly.

Tottenham appeared to be coasting to victory, taking a 2-0 lead before half time as Brennan Johnson and James Maddison found the net.

Spurs completely crumbled after the break though and ended up losing 3-2 with a frankly embarrassing second-half display which left Dimitar Berbatov bewildered.

Yankuba Minteh, Georginio Rutter and Danny Welbeck all found the net, leaving Ange Postecoglou to describe this as the worst defeat in his time as Spurs boss.

Tottenham endured a miserable Sunday but one former Spurs goalkeeper has hit the headlines for his performance.

Ex-Tottenham stopper the hero in La Liga

Some Tottenham fans may have forgotten all about Paulo Gazzaniga.

Mauricio Pochettino pounced to sign Gazzaniga from Southampton back in 2017 having worked with his fellow Argentinian on the South Coast.

Gazzaniga arrived as competition for Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm and made 37 appearances for Spurs before being released in 2021.

Gazzaniga then joined Fulham but has really found a home with Girona in Spain having initially joined on loan in 2022.

Now a permanent Girona player, Gazzaniga produced incredible heroics on Sunday afternoon.

Girona hosted Athletic Club in La Liga and won the game 2-1 thanks to a late penalty from Cristhian Stuani.

That doesn’t even begin to tell the story of this game though as Gazzaniga saved not one, not two but three penalties.

Alex Berenguer was first to step up but Gazzaniga saved his spot kick before Girona gave away another penalty in the second half.

Inaki Williams stepped up this time but Gazzaniga saved it again, only to be penalised for coming off his line early.

That prompted a retake and Ander Herrera took over, only to meet the same fate as Gazzaniga pulled off a third spot kick save of the game.

Those saves ended up being crucial as Girona went on to win the game with Gazzaniga emerging as the hero in bizarre fashion.

Spanish media react to Paulo Gazzaniga heroics

The Spanish media moved to praise Gazzaniga as he became the star of the show.

Heraldo praised Gazzaniga for an ‘epic performance’ as he embarrassed three Athletic players from the spot.

SPORT branded Gazzaniga a ‘hero’, rating him as a nine out of 10 for his superb performance.

Gazzaniga has become worldwide news after his penalty heroics, something Tottenham fans couldn’t have expected upon leaving the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2021.

Now a Champions League player with Girona, Gazzaniga is certainly enjoying himself in Catalunya and surely prefers this to sitting on the Tottenham bench.
