Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has been sent a very clear warning by a fellow World Cup winner after the team were beaten by Ipswich Town.

Spurs were beaten 2-1 by Kieran McKenna’s team at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday as they missed the chance to move third and will instead head into the international break sat tenth.

First-half goals from Sammie Szmodics and Liam Delap were enough for the visitors to hold on for their first win in the Premier League since 2002.

Now a legendary Premier League defender has told Spurs’ Argentine star what he needs to do to start helping out Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Cristian Romero fired leadership warning by Frank Leboeuf

France World Cup winner Frank Leboeuf warned Romero that he needs to start showing some leadership by being the player to organise Tottenham’s defence.

The former Chelsea defender believes that someone in Spurs’ back line needs to step up and take some responsibility for the errors which keep happening.

Leboeuf told ESPN FC: “The players, especially players like Romero, I would say or even Porro, experienced players, they should deal at some point, say, come on, guys, we are going to start defending, so you come back, you come back, you stop your stupid things you know going nowhere and not defending.

“You have to organise something. It’s an intuitive sport and players from the back, especially experienced players, they have to deal with the situation, and right now, I am sorry, Romero, he has the experience for that. He should be the leader and people should listen to him.”

How bad are Tottenham’s defensive numbers?

Tottenham’s defensive numbers aren’t actually that bad, but they must cut out the errors from their game which are leading to them conceding sloppy goals.

Guglielmo Vicario’s lack of clean sheets is now a cause for concern with the Italian having kept just two all season so far after 13 matches.

The Lilywhites do have some very good defenders in Romero, Pedro Porro, Destiny Uodgie, Micky van de Ven and even Radu Dragusin, but one of them needs to step up and take responsibility for leading the others.

Leboeuf is right though, Romero as vice-captain and a World Cup winner needs to be the man who must step up to the mantle and take responsibility.
