Leicester City defender and BBC Sport pundit Conor Coady has made a big claim about who Tottenham’s most important player now is.

Spurs recorded a second straight win in the Premier League as they defeated Manchester United and are now starting to show signs of clicking into gear under Ange Postecoglou.

The North London club are finally turning strong performances into results as they ran riot at Old Trafford on September 29 winning 3-0 against the Red Devils.

Goals from Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke secured the three points, although it was Micky van de Ven’s incredible assist for Johnson’s strike which stole the headlines.

After the game, Coady now explained why Tottenham’s £42 million man is now the most important player for them based on the way Postecoglou set his team up.

Why Postecoglou builds his team around Micky van de Ven

Coady claims that Micky Van de Ven is now Tottenham’s most important player as Postecoglou’s whole way of playing is built around him.

The defender’s incredible speed means the team can play a high line and have full-backs getting forward all because they have the insurance policy of his speed.

Coady told The Monday Night Club: “He leaves a massive hole if he doesn’t play. They build a team around playing that way because they’re up on the halfway line, but to play that way you need a profile of a player like Van de Ven. He just gives the licence for the team to play in that way with the full-backs going forward.

“I love when centre-backs are the most important players in the team. One is because I’m a centre-back, I love watching good centre-backs, and I love it when we see different types of centre-backs come to the Premier League.”

When asked whether the 23-year-old is Spurs’ most important player, Coady added: “I completely agree, I think he is [the most important player in the team]. I think Son is a phenomenal player, he’s super important to Tottenham but I just go back to my point before about the whole way they play.

“Especially when I look at Romero, I think he’s a fantastic player, but I don’t think he can be as aggressive as he can be if he doesn’t have him [Van de Ven] next to him.”

Where does Van de Ven’s pace rank in the Premier League?

Van de Ven is the fastest-recorded Premier League player of all time, according to the Premier League’s official site.

Last season, he registered a top speed of 37.38km/h which is the fastest any player has ever been recorded since data started in 2020/21.

This season, that is the same case as the Dutchman continues to lead the way for the quickest top speed by any player.
