Bruno Fernandes believes Harry Kane would have become the Premier League’s all-time record scorer had he stayed at Tottenham, but says the striker’s decision to join Bayern Munich has given him a far better chance of winning the Ballon d’Or.
In 2023, Kane left Spurs for Bayern in a £100 million deal in the hope of continuing to elevate his profile in world football and finally win major titles.
🌟 Will Harry Kane win the Ballon d’Or this year?
The 32-year-old ended his wait for a major trophy last season by winning the Bundesliga and is now firing Bayern on their way to a potential Champions League title.
But while he could have stayed in North London and gone in pursuit of Alan Shearer’s goal record, Fernandes feels the move to Germany has opened the door to the Ballon d’Or.
Bruno Fernandes backs Harry Kane to win the Ballon d’Or
Bruno Fernandes is now backing Harry Kane to win the Ballon d’Or this year following his outstanding form for Bayern Munich.
The former Spurs striker has netted a staggering 49 goals in 41 matches for the Bavarians this season, with Vincent Kompany’s team well on course to win more major titles.
The Manchester United midfielder told The Times: “If he had stayed [at Tottenham] another one or two seasons, he’d have been the best goalscorer ever in the Premier League.
“So, would he have been a legend or not? He would. He decided to go to Bayern, and the decision is good because he knows he has a big chance of winning trophies.
“Now we’re talking about Harry Kane, who is scoring the same amount of goals he was scoring at Tottenham, but he might win a Ballon d’Or now because he’s going to win trophies.”
🔮 IMAGINE THIS: Where would Tottenham be right now if they still had both HARRY KANE and ANGE POSTCOGLOU?
Kane is currently the leading contender to win the Ballon d’Or, along with Bayern teammate Michael Olise Fernandes and Declan Rice.
If Bayern are able to go all the way in the Champions League, that might all but confirm Kane’s hopes of winning football’s biggest individual accolade.
For a Tottenham academy graduate to win a Ballon d’Or, it would be a bittersweet moment for the club, knowing that, yes, he won it, but they also managed to waste his talent in N17.
