Tottenham Hotspur suffered a second successive as they were beaten 1-0 by Arsenal leaving them with their worst start to a Premier League campaign in nine years.
Gabriel Magalhaes’ goal just after the hour mark proved to be the decisive moment in the derby as the Gunners recorded a third straight win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spurs again looked good but as has been the case this season, they struggled to turn possession and chances into goals and a result.
Ange Postecoglou is now coming under pressure to quickly ensure that changes, although the Australian has explained why he believes it hasn’t yet clicked for his team.
Postecoglou happy with Tottenham’s attacking options
Postecoglou claims he is happy with Tottenham’s attacking options. The North London club have failed to make their dominance in games pay but the 59-year-old believes it’s simply down to his players not yet being up to speed, as opposed to a lack of quality.
Speaking in his press conference ahead of Spurs’ Carabao Cup clash with Coventry, Postecoglou said: “We’re nowhere near capacity in terms of the players we have there, at the moment. Dom Solanke is an obvious one, Richy hasn’t even played yet.
“It’s fair to say Sonny has had a stop-start to the season. He hasn’t hit the consistent levels. The other guys like Brennan [Johnson] and Wilson [Odobert], I think there’s a lot of growth in there. Timo [Werner] hasn’t had much of an opportunity.
“I think we have at present enough there to overcome the deficiencies we have at the moment through more a lack of fluency and cohesion in that front third. We just haven’t been able to nail on a formation there that will give us some consistency.”
What does Tottenham’s best attack look like?
Hopefully, as he gets more game time under his belt, Solanke’s form at Tottenham will continue to improve. The forward did impress in the first half in the North London derby.
The striker didn’t get many opportunities and spurned Spurs’ best chance of the game, but his general play was good. He proved a handful for both William Saliba and Gabriel and linked up well with his team’s other attackers.
Heung-min Son has also had a tricky start to the season as for one reason or another he has struggled for consistency and not having a player like the South Korean in top form will hurt the team.
Dejan Kulusveski again looked more effective in an attacking midfield role and Spurs will hope James Maddison can continue to get back his best form. That then leaves Odobert and Johnson fighting it out for a place on the right wing.
