Ange Postecoglou reveals where he now sees Dejan Kulusevski’s best position for Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur were defeated 1-0 by Arsenal leaving them with their worst start to a Premier League campaign in nine years.

Gabriel Magalhaes’ goal just after the hour mark proved to be the decisive moment in the derby as the Gunners recorded a third straight win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs played well but failed to convert possession and chances into goals and a result – which is quickly becoming an issue for Ange Postecoglou.

There were several eye-catching displays from Tottenham players, including Dejan Kulusevski who was playing in a new role and did very well.

Postecoglou on Kulusevski’s best position

Postecoglou has revealed that Kulusevski impressed him playing in attacking midfield and the Swede now looks to have found a new best position at Spurs. Against Arsenal, the 59-year-old opted for an offensive midfield duo of James Maddison and Kulusevski.

The Aussie coach now has several midfield options in Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr, Lucas Bervall, Archie Gray and Rodrigo Bentancur, but he has yet to find his best trio.

Speaking in his press conference ahead of Spurs’ Carabao Cup clash with Coventry, Postecoglou said: “I look at our attacking midfield players, I think there’s massive upside in [Dejan] Kulusevski.

“I’m seeing more and more growth in him in that attacking midfield role. I definitely think there is the capacity to improve there in that area, for sure, 100 percent.”

James Maddison needs to be dropped by Ange Postecoglou

Maddison produced another underwhelming display in the North London derby as he failed to take hold of the game.

The midfielder proved anonymous yet again as he was on the periphery of the match rather than being Tottenham’s creative hub.

The 27-year-old was equally as disappointing away at St James’ Park in a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle and in a game where Spurs needed him to step up.

Now is the time for Postecoglou to find an alternative to Maddison and against Coventry, players like Bervall, Gray and Sarr will all have chances to impress.
