Here’s a look at every Tottenham captain during the Premier League era so far.
Tottenham Hotspur have had plenty of great leaders in their time during the Premier League era. While there have been some club stalwarts, others that have worn the armband haven’t always managed to fit the bill.
From club legends and fan favourites to rival “traitors”, there’s been a real mixed bunch of leaders for Spurs. So with that said, here’s a look at a list of all the Tottenham Hotspur club captains in the Premier League era.

Every Tottenham club captain
Gary Mabbutt – 1987-1998

- Position: Centre-back
- Appearances: 575
- Goals: 36
Gary Mabbutt is a Tottenham legend, following a 16-year spell with the club between 1982 and 1998. The former England defender was handed the armband in 1987, where he would keep the role until his retirement at the end of the 1997/98 season.
Mabbutt won two major honours with Spurs, lifting the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup in his long stint with the club.
Sol Campbell – 1998-2001

- Position: Centre-back
- Appearances: 301
- Goals: 13
The exit of Mabbutt left some big shoes to fill, so up stepped Sol Campbell to take the captaincy role. The defender had been a stalwart in the backline since 1992, coming through the Tottenham academy setup at the time.
England appearances followed and Campbell was widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the league. However, Spurs fans would soon come to loathe their one-time captain, who left for rivals Arsenal on a free transfer in 2001, being viewed as a “traitor” for making the switch.
Teddy Sheringham – 2001-2003

- Position: Striker
- Appearances: 267
- Goals: 117
At a time of change, a return for striker Teddy Sheringham for a second stint at Tottenham saw him pick up the armband. The influential forward went on to make 70 appearances in the two-years he spent back in north London, before leaving for Portsmouth.
Jamie Redknapp – 2003-2005

- Position: Centre-midfielder
- Appearances: 49
- Goals: 4
With yet more change at Tottenham, Jamie Redknapp was handed the armband following the exit of Sheringham. The midfielder, who impressed at Liverpool, made just 49 appearances for Spurs before leaving for Southampton.
Ledley King – 2005-2012

- Position: Centre-back/centre-midfielder
- Appearances: 322
- Goals: 13
Ledley King was then handed the captaincy, with the defender being a stalwart for the club between 1999 and 2012. King has gone down as an icon at Spurs, though injury cut short a career that could’ve hit even greater heights.
Michael Dawson – 2012-2014

- Position: Centre-back
- Appearances: 324
- Goals: 10
Another defender that has seen it all for Tottenham is Michael Dawson, who was next in line for the captaincy. Following his move from Nottingham Forest in 2005, the centre-back made over 300 appearances for Spurs in nine-years.
Younes Kaboul – 2014-2015

- Position: Centre-back
- Appearances: 139
- Goals: 8
Mauricio Pochettino needed to name a new club captain in 2014 and opted for Younes Kaboul, who had two stints with Tottenham. The defender struggled in the role and was eventually dropped by mid-November, with the manager opting for a new leader.
Hugo Lloris – 2015-2023

- Position: Goalkeeper
- Appearances: 447
- Goals: 0
Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was named the new club captain in 2015, going on to keep the armband until summer 2023. The shotstopper has the second-longest reign as leader behind Mabbutt and enjoyed many successful years with Tottenham.
Heung-Min Son – 2023-Present

- Position: Forward
- Appearances: Ongoing
- Goals: Ongoing
Heung-Min Son is the latest name on the list of captains to represent Tottenham, filling the void left by Lloris and vice-captain Harry Kane making their exits. The forward has represented his country with the armband and will be looking to lead by example with Spurs too.
