Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven has made a lot of headlines this week, but it was an unwanted one on Saturday against Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Lilywhites went behind in the first half after Pascal Gross netted from the spot, sending Guglielmo Vicario the wrong way.
It was the Dutch centre-back who gave away the penalty with a foul on the former Arsenal man Danny Welbeck seeing the referee point to the spot.
Van de Ven sets unwanted record
Referee Sam Barrott did not have to think twice when Van de Ven put his foot in on Welbeck inside the box.
It was, unfortunately, the correct decision from the first-year referee and it was a costly error from the centre-back who has impressed massively this season.
But, according to BBC Sport, his mistake saw Spurs become the Premier League side who have conceded the most (six) penalties this season.
Uncharacteristic error from Van de Ven
Thankfully, this is very unusual error to see from the Dutch defender as we have become accustomed to seeing faultless performances since his arrival in the summer.
His displays in a Spurs shirt has seen the likes of pundit Stan Collymore suggest some of Europe’s biggest clubs will already be eyeing a potential move.
The error also comes just days after the 22-year-old was crowned the fastest ever recorded player in Premier League history.
It is still very early days in the career of the young Dutchman and it has to be remembered that this is just his first season in the Premier League.
His showings so far have provided us with a lot of confidence for things to come and one mistake should not distract us from just how well he has bedded into life in N17.
