Football broadcasting legend Jeff Stelling couldn’t help but question Tottenham Hotspur’s atmosphere during their Champions League clash against Villarreal.
Spurs sealed a 1-0 victory over the Spanish outfit on Tuesday night on their return to the competition, with Lucas Bergvall’s early strike enough to claim all three points.
There were areas of the ground that were empty for the occasion, though, with only an estimated 250 Villarreal fans in attendance in the away end too.
Taking to X after the game, Stelling noted the subdued presence of the crowd.

Jeff Stelling questions the ‘lack of atmosphere’ during Tottenham’s win against Villarreal
Stelling, a household name after serving as presenter on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday for almost 30 years, asked on X: “Is it just that tv effects mics are too low or is there a lack of atmosphere at Spurs?”
The Tottenham supporters that were present for the clash made plenty of noise during the flash points in the game, especially when Bergvall found the back of the net.
However, given the fixture marked Spurs’ long-awaited return to the Champions League, many would have expected a packed out stadium with a raucous atmosphere.
Plenty of Tottenham fans pointed out the ticket prices for the clash when replying to Stelling’s post.
Tottenham fans take issue with Champions League ticket prices
Thomas Frank’s debut in the competition was played out in front of thousands of empty seats.
Large numbers of Spurs fans on social media have blamed this on ticket prices ranging from £27 to £96.
This is expected to continue for the rest of the league phase.
Spurs will also host Slavia Prague, Borussia Dortmund and Copenhagen.
