Tottenham’s search for a striker saw them sign Dominic Solanke this summer – but should they have chosen another forward?

Dominic Solanke was Tottenham Hotspur’s statement signing of the summer window, arriving from fellow Premier League outfit Bournemouth for a record £65m.

Having notched 19 league goals for the Cherries last campaign, Solanke arrives at Hotspur Way with lots of expectation on his back.

We are yet to see the former Liverpool man in full flow yet, but if Solanke fails to find the back of the net quickly, many fans will undoubtedly start to question his signing and possibly wonder why Tottenham did not make a move for other strikers.

With that being said, one of Tottenham’s other forward targets from this summer is now seemingly nearing a move to arch-rivals Arsenal – which could potentially leave Spurs with egg on their face.

Tottenham showed interest in Viktor Gyokeres

It was reported back in March that Tottenham were interested in Viktor Gyokeres but the Lilywhites ultimately failed to make a move for the Sporting Lisbon man.

Gyokeres bagged an insane 43 goals in all competitions last season, catching the eye of Arsenal, Chelsea, and Spurs in the process.

Having fired Sporting to the Portuguese title last campaign, the Swede was expected to be on the move this summer but no team activated his reported £86m release clause despite a number of top sides needing an elite forward.

One side who spent all summer in search of a striker is Arsenal and the Gunners could now be edging closer to securing the former Coventry man’s signature, as Gyokeres leaves the door open to a potential move to the Emirates.

Gyokeres told Sport Bladet: “They (Sporting) wanted most of the starting players to stay and held us tight. I enjoy Sporting very much, so for me it was no problem to stay. Of course. You want to play at the highest level. It (£85m release clause) was probably a bit too much because nothing came of it. Of course it’s a lot of money. But we’ll see what happens next window.

“Nothing happened and it feels like I had a pretty good season. So yes, that’s probably why there was simply no move. But that’s what Sporting thinks I’m worth, and then you have to respect that.”

How does Gyokeres compare to Solanke?

If Gyokeres does bag a move to the Emirates it will inevitably lead to endless comparisons between the Swede and Solanke.

The pair are quite similar in how they play, both being experts on how to get on the end of chances.

Both players have also learned their craft in the EFL, with Solanke and Gyokeres both having spent time at the top of the Championship’s goalscoring charts.

With that being said, it is also worth taking look at the stats to see how the two number nine’s compare.

The stats suggest Tottenham may have been better off going for Gyokeres this summer, but Solanke’s goalscoring experience in the Premier League should not be underestimated.

Spurs fans though will no doubt have full faith in Ange Postecoglou when it comes to getting the best out of their new striker.
