Tottenham Hotspur could still make a ‘controversial’ move for Chelsea star Conor Gallagher before deadline day.

The Daily Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has shared the latest on Tottenham’s interest in Conor Gallagher.

Spurs are long-term admirers of Gallagher and attempted to land the Englishman over the summer.

The 23-year-old has since established himself as a key player under former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge.

Gallagher has stepped in as the club’s captain in the absence of Reece James this season, making 20 appearances for the Blues in the league.

But there remains the possibility of him leaving Stamford Bridge before Thursday’s deadline and in what Edwards has labelled a ‘shocking’ transfer, Spurs could yet test Chelsea’s resolve this week.

Tottenham could make ‘controversial’ move for Gallagher

Speaking on the Transfer Gossip Daily Podcast, Edwards claimed that Spurs could tempt Chelsea into selling Gallagher with a £50 million bid this week.

The journalist described the potential move as ‘controversial’ due to Gallagher’s importance to this current Chelsea side.

But the possibility of the Blues accepting a late offer for the midfielder can’t be ruled out at this stage.

“It’s really interesting,” Edwards said. “I said that it would be complete and utter madness for Chelsea to sell the player they have given their captain’s armband to under Pochettino.

“But it comes down to business logic. He has 18 months left on his deal and he has been made available, a soft availability is what I call it. The world of football has known Conor Gallagher, if you pay the right money he will be allowed to leave.

“Tottenham have had a long-standing interest. Tottenham sold Harry Kane for pure profit and they have got the room to do stuff this month that other clubs haven’t.

“I just wonder, if Tottenham put in a £40 or £50 million bid, probably £50 million for Conor Gallagher, it would be accepted. And I think that’s a real shame. Because they went and spent £115 million on Moises Caicedo and £100 million on Enzo Fernandez they are now in a position where they have to sell this player who has come through the system to their biggest rivals.

“I think that would be one of the most shocking, the most talked about, the most headline-grabbing transfers.

“It’s been rumoured all month. If Tottenham are going to make their move they will have to do it in the next 48 hours but that’s definitely one of the more controversial transfers that could happen.”

Chelsea are in a position where they will have to sell to buy due to their previous exploits in the transfer market.

Gallagher is a player who is clearly admired by Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham, with links to the player dating back to the summer.

If Spurs could pull off a deal for the Englishman in the final days of the window, it would be a real statement of intent.

Gallagher has arguably been Chelsea’s standout performer this season and it would be a huge story if he completed a switch to their London rivals mid-season.

This is certainly one to keep an eye on over the coming days and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Spurs make a late move to sign the Blues star.
