Tottenham Hotspur actually have the edge over Newcastle United in the race to sign James Maddison this summer.

That’s according to journalist Dean Jones, who has shared an update on Tottenham’s interest in Maddison on the Ranks FC Patreon

Recent reports have suggested that Newcastle are the current favourites to land Maddison, with The Evening Standard claiming Spurs face a challenge to convince the 26-year-old to move to North London.

Yet, Jones has heard different information from his sources. The journalist claims that Tottenham have the edge over Newcastle because Spurs are close to the agents doing the deal.

Tottenham have edge over Newcastle for Maddison

Jones claims it will take an offer worth around £55 million to land Maddison this summer, with Spurs currently the favourites.

“Most people are backing him to join Newcastle but my current information goes slightly against that,” the journalist wrote.

“I’m told the agents doing the deal are pretty close with Spurs and that is one of a few reasons Tottenham might have an edge here.

“It’s going to take around £55 million to land him. Newcastle say they won’t spend more than £75m this summer but take that with a pinch of salt.”

Of course, it’s widely known that Maddison’s agency, CAA Base, has close connections with Tottenham.

Indeed, Alasdair Gold recently claimed that the England star shares the same agents as new Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou.

Maddison would be an excellent addition to Spurs’ side as they bid to build a squad in Ange Postecoglou’s image.

The Aussie boss will need some fresh faces in the middle of the park as he favours playing with two more advanced midfielders.

Maddison would certainly fit the bill as a player who is capable of playing in a more advanced No8 position.

The Spurs News View

There seems to be contrasting information on Maddison this week, with Tottenham leading the race one minute, then Newcastle the next.

One thing is for sure, Spurs are in desperate need of a player like Maddison as they’ve lacked a creative midfielder over the past few seasons.

You’d like to think that Tottenham will match Newcastle’s offer for the England star and ultimately allow him to decide his preference.
