Barcelona have made move to sign £27m Tottenham player on loan in January

Barcelona have reportedly attempted to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso on loan this month.

Xavi is a long-term admirer of the Tottenham midfielder and was said to be high up on Barcelona’s list of midfield targets in January. 

The Catalan club have previously expressed interest in Giovani Lo Celso after being linked with a move for the Argentine over the summer. 

The Evening Standard claims Barca reignited their interest this month and attempted to land Lo Celso on loan. 

But their move was knocked back by Spurs, with the 27-year-old currently enjoying his football under Ange Postecoglou. 

Barcelona have moved to sign Lo Celso in January

The Standard reports that Barca have ‘repeatedly’ spoken to Tottenham about signing Lo Celso. 

But Spurs chiefs feel offers for the midfielder have been ‘low-ball’ so far, with the terms of the loan and wages falling well short of their demands.

It’s also claimed that Lo Celso is enjoying life under Postecoglou at Tottenham. 

Lo Celso has enjoyed a run in the Tottenham side of late in the absence of James Maddison.

The £27 million midfielder has registered four goal involvements in eight Premier League games since Maddison suffered an ankle injury in early November. 

Allowing the Argentine to leave on loan would make little sense for Spurs given the fact that Postecoglou is short of options in midfield. 

With Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma participating in AFCON 2024, the Aussie hasn’t exactly got the pick of the bunch at the moment.

Maddison is eyeing a return to action tomorrow night against Manchester City. But it would benefit Postecoglou to keep Lo Celso around until the summer as he’s shown he’s capable of stepping up in Maddison’s absence. 

Spurs may change their stance come the end of the season, particularly if they are able to land one of their top midfield targets.
