Tottenham Hotspur reached a peculiar agreement with Real Betis as part of a deal to sell Giovani Lo Celso as they secured the chance to sign Johnny Cardoso.
Spurs sold Lo Celso to Betis on the final day of the summer transfer window as the club managed to finally offload him.
The Argentine returns to the Spanish club he left back in 2019 for a fee of around £45 million to join Tottenham.
The 28-year-old returned to Betis in a deal worth £8.4 million plus add-ons and the chance to sign Johnny Cardoso for a fixed fee.
Whilst securing the chance to sign a player seems an unusual arrangement, Cardoso is a highly-rated midfielder and this could come in handy next summer.

How much Johnny Cardoso will cost Tottenham
A potential deal for Johnny Cardoso will cost Tottenham £21 million should they take up their option, according to the Telegraph.
Spurs will have a two-week window to secure a deal for the United States midfielder during the 2025 summer transfer window.
Real Betis’ club president, Ángel Haro revealed: “Johnny is a player who is of interest not only to Tottenham but to many other teams, who has great potential.
“In this case, within the Gio operation, they asked us for an option to buy for a value that was important and interesting for us and we did give them that option.”
Cardoso has been used as a substitute in two of Betis’ first three La Liga matches this season and was an unused sub against Alavés.
Tottenham told Johnny Cardoso could be a ‘future superstar’
Tottenham fans may be unfamiliar with Cardoso and that would come as no surprise given how new to Europe he is.
The United States international joined Betis from Brazilian club SC Internacional back in January and made 19 appearances for the Spanish club last season.
But during that period, he made a quick impression as he became a key part of Los Verdiblancos’ team who qualified for Europe.
Football fans took to X to share their thoughts on Cardoso. One fan said: “Johnny Cardoso is one of the best number six’s in the market, and almost nobody knows him. Whoever pays the price Betis is asking for £25M will have fixed its number six spot for the next decade.”
Another added: “Betis’ new defensive midfielder Johnny Cardoso, he’s so good he’s already won La Liga U23 POTM in his first season, he’s a proper ball winner and I think wouldn’t be a bad option for us [Bayern Munich] for a cheap DM, he’s still only 22 but plays like he’s been in Spain for years.”
A Spurs fan said: “Since I had little to no idea about what kind of a player Johnny Cardoso was, I searched it on YouTube and found a very detailed analysis of him. I would say we should definitely sign him in January, that’s a potential ‘future superstar’.”
