Ange Postecoglou delivers ‘excellent’ Tottenham transfer verdict after January business

Tottenham were one of nine clubs in the Premier League to strengthen in the January transfer window, with hopes of ending the season strong.

After a month where few teams were able to do meaningful business, Ange Postecoglou appeared content with his moves. Spurs added Timo Werner early in the window on a loan deal from RB Leipzig for the rest of the campaign.

Should the former Chelsea striker impress, there is claimed to be a permanent option in the range of £15million for the summer. While that looked to solidify the forward ranks, there was a desire to strengthen at the back too.

With an eye on a permanent solution at centre-back, Radu Dragusin joined from Genoa as an option for both the current season and the future beyond. Sprinkle in some promising loan moves for Alejo Veliz, Ashley Phillips, Alfie Devine and a few other youngsters and it appears to be a decent window for the Lilywhites.

Ange Postecoglou transfer verdict

Speaking in his Tottenham press conference on Friday, ahead of his side’s clash with Everton in the Premier League, Postecoglou reflected on the transfer window. He told the media: “We had clear objectives. We had a gap at centre-back after letting Davinson Sanchez go and getting Radu [Dragusin] in was great.

“Getting Timo [Werner] early also excellent. We’ve had injuries with Sonny [Son Heung-Min] away, and already he’s made a contribution. If we left it to the last day it takes time to settle. Both have settled well.

“With outgoings, we got some good loans. With Alejo [Veliz] it’s great for him to get game time at a good club. Also players like Ashley Phillips and Alfie Devine got good loans.”

Tottenham’s transfer project

It’s clear that Ange Postecoglou is trying to build something at Tottenham that will last for a long time. The majority of his signings at Tottenham, from Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin to Guglielmo Vicario and Brennan Johnson, have been on the younger age scale.

There appears to be room for this Spurs side to grow beyond where they are now, which is playing attractive football while earning results. If the Lilywhites continue to improve within the squad and from external transfers, then the sky could be the limit.
