Tottenham Hotspur remain in talks with Bayern Munich over a deal to sign Joao Palhinha, but it would be a huge mistake to make a permanent deal.
The 30-year-old played a key role in helping Spurs remain a Premier League side last season; however, it is now time for the North London club to find an upgrade.
How much should Tottenham pay to sign Joao Palhinha?
He may have saved Tottenham!
The former Sporting CP star clearly added great value to Tottenham’s dressing room, but with the midfield being a key area in need of an upgrade, Spurs must sign someone better.
Talks are ongoing over a deal for the Portuguese international, and Roberto De Zerbi seems to be a big fan, but making him a permanent signing could be a disaster.
Tottenham must find an upgrade for Joao Palhinha this summer
Tottenham Hotspur must avoid making Joao Palhinha’s move permanent, regardless of how key he was for the team last season.
Spurs are in talks with Bayern over a deal for Palhinha, according to Florian Plettenburg, but are keen to lower the £21.5 million option to buy, which they agreed last summer.
This summer, Spurs need to get their midfield signing spot on, as that was arguably their biggest weakness last season.
The Lilywhites had real issues with having a player in the middle of the park who was able to help the team transition from defence to attack.
Tottenham need to find a midfielder who is willing to receive the ball from deep and look to progress the ball forward.
👀Who should be the FIRST Tottenham player sold this summer?🤔
Palhinha brought great value to Spurs’ relegation survival bid as he is a fighter and is best known for his ability to break up play.
But in possession, he is rather limited and now it is time for Tottenham to find an all-action number six who is comfortable with the ball.
Tottenham will need to sell a midfielder this summer
But for Tottenham to become a team which looks to play on the front foot and be dominant in possession, adding a player like Palhinha is no longer a necessity.
Whilst midfield remains a pressing issue, Spurs are already stacked in that department, with James Maddison, Conor Gallagher, Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur.
To bring in another midfielder, one of those players would need to go, with Sarr probably the most likely candidate.
Bergvall and Gray both underperformed last season, but their potential means that Spurs would be silly to let either of them leave in the summer.
Therefore, there just simply is no room for Palhinha if Tottenham are hoping to sign a new midfielder, and the Lilywhites should walk away from a deal.
