Why Tottenham may be regretting missing out on Ange Postecoglou’s top £33M target

Tottenham Hotspur had a rather mixed summer transfer window as they brought in just one senior player by signing Dominic Solanke.

Spurs signed four talented teenagers but the 27-year-old striker was the only player who has immediately made it into Spurs’ line-up.

Archie Gray, Lucas Brevall, Wilson Odobert and Yang Min-hyeok were the quartet of youngsters added to the squad, but have all struggled for regular minutes so far, whilst Yang is out on loan.

Tottenham’s lacklustre start to the season may leave Ange Postecoglou wishing the club backed him that little bit more, especially with one of his key targets making such a good start to the new campaign.

Conor Gallagher makes excellent start to life in Madrid

One of Postecoglou’s top summer targets was Conor Gallagher, however, the midfielder ended up joining Atletico Madrid instead for £33 million.

The 24-year-old has made a superb start to life in Madrid and is flourishing under Diego Simeone as expected.

The former Chelsea captain has scored in both of his last two matches getting goals against Rayo Vallecano and Valencia.

Gallagher’s performances for the Colchoneros have also earned him back-to-back La Liga man of the matches with impressive showings in the two games.

Atletico have made a decent start to the new season and are currently undefeated after six matches in fourth place on 12 points.

Should Tottenham have actually signed Conor Gallagher?

Probably not is the answer. Postecoglou has so far lined his midfield up with two very attacking number 10s in James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski.

Kulusevski has had a strong start to the season whilst Maddison’s form in the opening five matches has been pretty hit-and-miss. However, he was excellent against Brentford in Spurs’ last outing playing in a new left-sided, deeper role.

Gallagher probably needed a dramatic change of scenery as he is a talented footballer, he just needs to be playing in the right conditions. The slower pace of La Liga is better suited to his style of play.
