Djed Spence shocked Tottenham Hotspur supporters by producing a thoroughly impressive display out of position at left wing against Borussia Dortmund.

It’s quite rare to see a full-back transition into a top winger, although Spurs certainly witnessed that with the development of Gareth Bale.

Now, Spence has just shown promising signs of being able to make the switch, as the 25-year-old looked so comfortable playing out wide for Tottenham.

During an impressive performance by Thomas Frank’s team, Spence really stood out, and a position change could now be on the cards.

Djed Spence could replicate Gareth Bale at Tottenham

It would be crazy to suggest that Djed Spence could reach the levels of Bale at Tottenham, but there is every chance he can successfully make the same position switch.

When Bale arrived at Spurs aged just 18 years old, he started as a left-back, and it took him quite some time to find his feet at the club.

It wasn’t until Harry Redknapp opted to play him on the wing that he finally delivered on the potential he showed at Southampton.

Spence also had a tough start at Tottenham, and it was Ange Postecoglou who was forced to give him his chance during the club’s injury crisis.

Since being given his chance at left-back, Spence has become one of the top full-backs in the Premier League and an England international.

Who was your Tottenham Man of the Match after the win over Dortmund?

But now, the 25-year-old could be about to make the switch to left wing following Frank’s successful experiment at home to Dortmund.

Yan Couto and Waldemar Anton were run ragged by the defender, who had seven touches, completed 26 passes, three dribbles and won seven duels during the win.

With Souza set to sign for Tottenham, it could allow Frank to give Spence more opportunities out on the left wing.

Thomas Frank says Djed Spence did ‘exceptionally well’ at left wing

Speaking after the match, Frank said he thought Spence did ‘exceptionally well’ at left wing and spoke about Spurs played more of a 3-4-3 system.

Speaking after the match, he told the media: “I think they did very well. So we played that, how can you say? It was a little bit of a 3-4-3, both to match it up, but also to do it a little bit, taking care of it. And Djed, I think, did exceptionally well, especially in the first half.”
