An alarming statistic has emerged involving one of Tottenham Hotspur’s key players and the impact he is having on Ange Postecoglou’s team’s loss percentage.
Spurs suffered another defeat as they let slip a two-goal, this time to their bitter rivals Chelsea who won 4-3 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The defeat leaves Postecoglou’s job in danger after his team suffered yet another implosion this season.
In the aftermath of the defeat to the Blues, one of the North London club’s players has been criticised for his involvement in yet another defeat in Tottenham colours.

Brennan Johnson’s shocking loss percentage with Tottenham
Brennan Johnson’s record of starting games when compared to matches he is not starting for Tottenham is quite alarming. Stats show that Spurs’ win percentage is significantly higher when the Welshman is not starting for Postecoglou’s team.
The Lilywhites have a point-per-game tally of 2.57 in the Premier League but that drops to just 1.28 when Johnson is in the team. It’s tricky to make much sense of this record given the 23-year-old’s goal contribution record.
This season, the £45 million man has six goals and one assist in the league and last term he netted five times and got an impressive ten assists. So why is a player who contributes so many goal involvements having such a negative effect on the team?
| Played | Won | Lost | Drawn | PPG | |
| Starting | 39 | 14 | 17 | 8 | 1.28 |
| Not starting | 14 | 12 | 2 | 0 | 2.57 |
| Total | 53 | 26 | 19 | 8 | 1.62 |
One of Johnson’s biggest strengths is his ability to arrive in the right position when chances arise and that’s how he’s managed so many goals. However, his weaknesses are his inability to retain possession particularly well and his work rate without the ball.
Too many times Spurs get overloaded down the right side of the pitch with opposition teams managing to expose this area. Earlier this season, The Spurs News took a look at how Tottenham kept conceding a similar goal.
How poor were Brennan Johnson’s stats vs Chelsea?
Johnson struggled to get involved against Chelsea as he failed to register a single attempt at goal, made four passes in total and had just 14 touches. But again, he leaves the match with a goal involvement having set up Dominic Solanke’s opener.
In fairness, Postecoglou revealed after the game that Johnson had been feeling unwell at half-time and he ended up being withdrawn after 53 minutes.
| Stat | Total |
| Minutes played | 53 |
| Assists | 1 |
| Shots | 0 |
| Touches | 14 |
| Accurate passes | 3/4 |
| Possession lost | 3 |
