Tottenham Hotspur have developed a worrying trend after Europa League matches and Ange Postecoglou must fix it immediately.

Spurs slumped to a shock defeat at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as they were beaten by Ipswich Town and missed the chance to move into third. Instead, they will head into the international break stuck in tenth and having handed the Tractor Boys their first Premier League win since 2002.

The 2-1 defeat followed a tough trip to Turkey to take on Galatasaray and after back-to-back defeats in the league and Europa League, a shocking trend how now emerged.

Tottenham struggle in the Premier League after Europa League matches

Tottenham have developed a worrying trend of losing Premier League matches on the weekend after a Europa League outing. Postecoglou’s team have now lost each of their last three league games which have followed a game on Thursday.

In their shock defeat to Ipswich, Tottenham never looked at the races and there appeared to be a real lack of effort from the players. But perhaps fatigue is playing a part in Spurs’ widely inconsistent results. Eight of Totteham’s starters against the Premier League’s new boys featured away at Galatasaray.

Other teams manage to juggle European and domestic football, but there has to be some sort of explanation for the team’s volatile results. Although having said that, Aston Villa and Arsenal have also struggled after European action having both won just once in the league after a Champions League fixture.

Ultimately, Spurs cannot just feel sorry for themselves though and they must learn how to deal with the demands of playing Thursday and then Sunday.

What is Tottenham’s run of Europa League-Premier League fixtures?

Tottenham still have work to do to finish in the top eight of the Europa League following their defeat to Galatasaray. They are currently sat seventh on nine points with five teams outside the automatic qualification spots all queueing up behind them on seven points.

Therefore, Postecgolou really will need to learn how to manage his squad better if he wants to stay consistent in the Premier League whilst reaching the Europa League knockout stages.

The Lilywhites’ two toughest tests after European matches see them host high-flying Fulham and Brentford away.
