Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has learned his fate for his role in the aftermath of Uruguay’s Copa America semi-final against Colombia.
The Spurs player will now serve a four-match ban at international level and must also pay a fine of $16,000 (around £12,100), as reported by AP.
Bentancur will now be unavailable for Uruguay’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay, Venezuela, Peru and Ecuador.
The Tottenham lynchpin will be available to feature for his country once again in November when they host Colombia.
Why has Rodrigo Bentancur been punished?
Bentancur started for his nation in their encounter against Los Cafeteros in Charlotte, North Carolina on 11 July.
Colombia ran out 1-0 winners over Uruguay, but the main talking point of the match was the trouble that followed in the stands after full-time.
Fans situated near the Uruguayan players’ families began to get out of control, and some of La Celeste’s players jumped into the stands.

As per football.london, footage emerged which appeared to show Bentancur hurling a bottle from the touchline.
This projectile seemingly struck a member of the Uruguayan staff who had climbed up into the stands.
Bentancur was one of 11 Uruguay players named after disciplinary investigations were opened by CONMEBOL in the aftermath of the scenes at the Bank of America Stadium.
Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez will be out for five Uruguay fixtures, while Mathias Olivera, Ronald Araujo and Jose Maria Gimenez have all received three-match suspensions.
Santiago Mele, Matias Vina, Sebastian Caceres, Emiliano Martinez, Facundo Pellistri and Brian Rodriguez all avoided a ban but were each fined $5,000 (£3,787).
In total, the AUF (Uruguayan Football Association) and the 11 players were fined $120,000 (£90,885).
