Djed Spence has been left out of Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur squad for the 2024/25 Europa League.

Spence looked to have worked with his way back into the manager’s plans, however, he has been omitted from the 23-man list. Sergio Reguilon also joins the defender in being left out of the squad.

New signings Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall have both been included in the squad, whilst Wilson Odobert is also selected.

Postecoglou will have to be wary of his selection to have picked four goalkeepers and just six defenders, making his decision to omit Spence a slight risk. The reason why Postecoglou had to leave Spence out of his European squad has now been explained.

Spence omitted from Tottenham Europa League squad

Football.London has revealed that due to strict UEFA rules, Tottenham could only select a list of 23 players due to their lack of homegrown talents.

Eight players out of the 25-man squad must be homegrown and four of those must be ‘club-trained players’, if not, the squad is reduced accordingly.

Tottenham only have two ‘club-trained players’ in Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman, therefore, they lose two spots and their squad size is reduced to 23.

Theoretically, it would have been a shootout between Spence and Fraser Forster for the final spot and Postecoglou has opted to go with his back-up goalkeeper.

It is also worth noting that ‘club-trained’ under-21 players such as Will Lankshear and Mikey Moore do not need to be registered in the main squad.

The North London club kick off their European campaign on September 26 at home to Azerbaijani club, Qarabag FK.
