What Tottenham are saying about Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray’s lack of game time ahead of January transfer window

Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall were two of Tottenham Hotspur’s big additions over the summer, however, both players have featured only sparsely over the first few months of the season.

Gray has played just 41 minutes of Premier League action so far whilst Bergvall is yet to complete a full 90 minutes under Ange Postecoglou.

The duo’s limited minutes have led to supporters questioning whther they need to be sent out on loan during the January transfer window.

However, the North London club have made their stance clear over the two teenagers and their plans for using them over the rest of the season.

Tottenham see Archie Gray as key part of squad

The Spurs News exclusively spoke to transfer insider Graeme Bailey of TBR Football, who said Tottenham have no plans to loan out Archie Gray in January and believes he is a big part of the squad.

The Lilywhites’ squad is already thin on the ground and even if they did think he needed to be loaned out, they can’t afford to limit their options even further.

Bailey told The Spurs News: “They see a future for him, Leeds might be one of the teams in the mix for him, but there are no plans to loan him back. Spurs haven’t got the biggest squad, especially in some areas and they are happy with what he is doing so far.

“Obviously you could argue with the way Spurs play with just one holding midfielder, it doesn’t lend itself to him getting game time at the minute.

“At the moment, in the system, Ange is playing he isn’t going to start but he is still a vital part of the club. He’s also learning every day, he’s playing with better players and from what I’m told, they don’t see the need for him to go out on loan.”

Rodrigo Bentancur’s ban could give Gray minutes. The Uruguayan is set to miss seven matches after being banned by the FA for his comments about South Koreans last summer.

Tottenham happy with Lucas Bergvall’s progression

Lucas Bergvall is in the same boat as Gray in that Tottenham are delighted with his progression and think he is learning a lot from the coaching staff, players and playing in senior matches.

The North London club also claim that Bergvall is ahead of where they were expecting him to be at this point, so there is no concern over his lack of minutes.

“They are delighted with him, of they really didn’t want him there, they would have loaned him out in the summer. He is ahead of where they thought he would be when he first came in,” added Bailey

“These games are going to do these players the world of good, even in defeat you can learn more than what you could from a win sometimes.

“I don’t know what the expectation is (from the supporters calling from Bergvall to be loaned out), I don’t think you expect many 18 year old to come in and make a too bigger impact.”
