Tottenham may have another injury concern on their hands for the weekend’s game against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Midfielder Yves Bissouma has emerged as a potential doubt for the game in N17 following his Africa Cup of Nations heartbreak with Mali.

The 27-year-old’s tournament is over, but it has now been reported he has been suffering from contracting malaria.

Worrying update emerges from AFCON

According to Mali’s head coach, Eric Chelle, the Spurs midfielder is one of two players in the squad who have contracted malaria since playing in the tournament.

Chelle said: “You know Yves and Moussa were suffering from malaria, regarding the blood tests.

“It’s not so serious, because someone born in West Africa is used to malaria, he could play but for Moussa it was different.”

The hosts of the tournament, Ivory Coast, knocked Mali out of the running last week in a quarter-final match where Bissouma only featured for extra time.

His minutes were fairly limited across the tournament having not featured at all in the round of 16 game against Burkina Faso; which may be a worrying sign for Spurs.

Bissouma may not make Brighton reunion

Bissouma enjoyed a promising start to life under Ange Postecoglou having become a regular in the starting XI.

Sky Sports man Micah Richards was full of praise for the midfielder earlier in the campaign, saying: “From the first game I remember doing Match of the Day and it was like wow, it’s a completely new player, the player we all thought he would be.”

But, unlike Pape Matar Sarr, it seems the Spurs man may not be able to make an instant return to action when his former club, Brighton, come to north London.

Tottenham have been hit with a number of injuries in midfield this term, but with James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentnacur back up and running it may be an absence Postecoglou can deal with.
