Rodrigo Bentancur has lifted the lid on that tackle with Aston Villa’s Matty Cash back in November.

Having just returned from a lengthy period on the sidelines through injury, Cash’s tackle put Rodrigo Bentancur back out of action.

The Uruguayan has since returned but has admitted it is taking him time to get up to speed with Ange Postecoglou’s demands.

Matty Cash’s tackle on Bentancur

The Aston Villa right-back has certainly developed somewhat of a reputation among the Spurs faithful.

Cash has now handed out hefty challenges to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Matt Doherty and now Bentancur.

The challenge on Tottenham’s 26-year-old midfielder sidelined him for a further month having just recovered from an ACL injury.

But speaking to Sky Sports, Bentancur has admitted he holds no real grudge towards the Polish defender. He said: “Everyone was always asking me how I felt about the tackle and whether I wanted to give him one back but that wasn’t the case. These things just happen in today’s football.”

Bentancur’s road to recovery

The midfielder returned just before the turn of the year, but questions were asked as to whether he was fit enough to do so after some of his displays.

He was able to net the equaliser in the game at Old Trafford back in January, but there was a sense he had rushed back into the side.

And he has now admitted that – in the interview with Sky – suggesting he felt the obligation to do so as Postecoglou’s options were so stretched due to injuries and international tournaments.

This is after all a player who did not have a pre-season under the Australian as he recovered from ACL damage.

And after recovering from that injury, he was then put out through yet another injury.

Spurs have options in the middle with Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr, so Bentancur should not be rushed back into the starting XI if he is not yet up to it.

A big season could be ahead for Spurs as they look set to play in European football next term and Bentancur will likely be heavily relied on given his experience.
