Archie Gray was a jack of all trades last season for Tottenham by covering multiple positions, but it now looks like he’s competing for a spot in central midfield. The Spurs youngster wants to improve two key areas of his game, too!
Last night, Spurs secured a comfortable 3-0 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against League One outfit Doncaster Rovers in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
Thomas Frank’s side continued a strong start to the campaign, winning five of their opening eight matches across all competitions. This includes 10 points from the first five Premier League fixtures.
Archie Gray, 19, has had a stop-start spell to the season because he’s in and out of the team. However, the teenage midfielder impressed with an eye-catching 90 minutes in midweek.
Spurs fans raved about Gray’s performance in the EFL Cup victory against Doncaster, which should give him some extra confidence moving forward.

Archie Gray desperate to improve goalscoring and creativity
After Spurs beat Doncaster in the cup, Gray spoke openly about his return to central midfield under Frank, which is where he played a lot of his football in the Leeds United academy.
The English talent’s aim is to contribute more goals and creativity this season.
When asked if there’s anything he wants to add to his game this year, Gray told SPURSPLAY: “I just think getting stuff back from when I was younger. Obviously I didn’t play in midfield too much recently. I think scoring goals and being more of a creative player further up the pitch, which was always my style of play when I was younger. I know people haven’t seen it much because I haven’t really played in midfield… I just want to show that here. Every minute that I get, I just want to try and show that.”
Gray proved why he’s a midfielder by trade against Doncaster, looking extremely composed in the centre of the park and moving the ball around effectively. Can he now replicate that in the Premier League, though?
The youngster has been patient so far this term waiting for his opportunities, which should come fairly frequently because of the crazy fixture list.
| Fixture | Competition | Minutes played |
| Tottenham 3-0 Doncaster Rovers | Carabao Cup | 90 |
| Brighton 2-2 Tottenham | Premier League | 1 |
| Tottenham 1-0 Villarreal | Champions League | 0 |
| West Ham 0-3 Tottenham | Premier League | 0 |
| Tottenham 0-1 Bournemouth | Premier League | 0 |
| Manchester City 0-2 Tottenham | Premier League | 0 |
| Tottenham 3-0 Burnley | Premier League | 71 |
| Paris Saint-Germain 2-2 Tottenham | Super Cup | 19 |
Earlier in September, Gray played at centre-back for England’s Under-21s, but his focus now at club level is around midfield work.

Archie Gray record in senior football
To date, Gray has provided very little attacking threat during his first-team career, partly down to the defensive positions he’s covered.
| Club | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
| Leeds United | 52 | 0 | 2 |
| Tottenham | 50 | 0 | 0 |
As you can see above, Gray can only really get better, which we expect him to do with more minutes in the centre of the park for Spurs. He now needs to show the end product to match his vision and potential.
If Gray wants to move ahead of teammates such as Lucas Bergvall, Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur in the midfield pecking order, he can help his case with attacking contributions.
