At the highest levels of professional sport, the best athletes need a combination of talent, drive, and athleticism.

And Tottenham Hotspur certainly have their fair share of players whose athletic capabilities are something to behold.

For instance, Spurs defender Micky van de Ven has clocked up a speed of 37.1km/h in the Premier League this season.

Last season, Van de Ven got as high as 37.38km/h, while Brennan Johnson clocked up 36.7km/h last term.

Now, Archie Gray has revealed his fastest ever 5km run time, and it left Driving Home With presenter Ben Haines absolutely stunned.

Tottenham star Archie Gray reveals he once did 5k in less than 16 minutes

Gray said he considers himself “pretty quick”, though he admitted that he’s not quite as fast as Van de Ven.

He then revealed that, towards the end of lockdown – presumably mid-2021 – he clocked up a 5k time of 15 minutes and 56 seconds.

“I’m pretty quick, definitely say so,” said Gray. “I’m not Micky van de Ven, but I don’t think many people are, to be fair!”

He went on to talk about 5k runs, saying: “In lockdown, just 5k’s wasn’t it, trying to beat everyone’s 5k times.”

When asked about his best 5k time, Gray said: “Best one I ever got was 15:56.”

A stunned Haines joked: “There are people that do parkrun up and down the country that will have just been sick hearing that time! Sub-16 5k!”

Gray continued: “I know the exact day I did that as well. It was towards the end of lockdown, I remember asking my dad, ‘if I get my best time in 5k, will you get me some FIFA points?”

“He said, ‘go on then’ and honestly, I must have sprinted the last kilometre, and I ended up getting 15:56 and I got them FIFA points, so I was buzzing!”

Gray’s record 5k run into perspective

Gray would have been 15 years old in mid-2021 and, according to Running Level, an ‘intermediate’ time for a boy that age is around 23:19, while an ‘elite’ time would be 18:17.

Gray’s 15:56 time would put him between the ‘elite’ category and the world record, which stands at 13:18, according to the source.

Indeed, the Tottenham midfielder’s record time is considerably lower than an ‘elite’ man between 20 and 30 years old (17:40).

No wonder Haines was stunned to hear Gray’s record 5k time, and it just goes to show what an elite athlete he is.
