Tottenham had real concerns over ‘incredible’ manager’s style of football, he was keen on the job

Tottenham Hotspur had concerns over Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim’s style of football after he was reportedly keen on the job.

That’s according to The Times, which claims that Tottenham have agreed a two-year contract with Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou ahead of his proposed move to North London. 

Spurs are seemingly closing in on Antonio Conte’s permanent successor after an exhaustive search for the right man.

Several high-profile candidates have been linked with the role, with the likes of Xabi Alonso, Arne Slot and Vincent Kompany all distancing themselves from speculation linking them to the Tottenham job.

One name that has featured on Tottenham’s list throughout the search is Ruben Amorim. 

Indeed, The Times also claimed just last month that Amorim had held talks with Spurs and was interested in taking the job. 

The 38-year-old boss has gained plenty of admirers due to the ‘incredible’ job he’s done at Sporting. But his preferred style of football has led to Spurs going for Postecoglou instead.

The Times notes that Tottenham held an interest in Amorim, but they had concerns over his counterattacking style of football at Sporting.

Of course, Spurs faced off against the Portuguese boss’ Sporting side on two occasions in the Champions League this season.

Tottenham largely dominated the ball over the course of both games and while they suffered a 2-0 defeat in Lisbon, they were unfortunate not to pick up three points in North London.

Amorim has impressed at Sporting as he’s guided them to a Portuguese league title, as well as two league cups and one super cup.

But after four years of defensive-minded managers such as Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte, it’s hardly a surprise that Tottenham have steered clear of another pragmatic manager.

Amorim would have been a good option for Tottenham if the club had wished to bring in a manager suited to their current squad.

Like Antonio Conte, the Portuguese boss has shown a preference for playing with a five-man defence with wing-backs.

But Spurs fans had grown tired of Conte’s negative approach and it’s an encouraging sign that the club have opted to go in a different direction.

With Postecoglou looking set to seal a switch to Spurs this week, barring a complete disaster, we should see something close to an overhaul of the first-team squad this summer. 

The Celtic boss sets his teams up with a four-man defence and the Tottenham squad will require major surgery if they are to build a side in his image.
