James Maddison has once again been forced to watch England from home after not being selected for the latest squad.

The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder had the disappointment over the summer of failing to make the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 squad.

The 27-year-old has a lot to prove this season following a thoroughly underwhelming debut campaign with Spurs.

The former Leicester man struggled to regain his form after recovering from a two-month layoff due to an ankle injury.

He has now been told why he may struggle to ever play for England again following his latest international setback.

England’s competition for places may spell trouble for Maddison’s international career

Tony Cascarino claims that James Maddison may never play for England again due to the sheer amount of competition in each position.

The TalkSPORT pundit claims the Spurs midfielder would be about fourth choice in each attacking position and even at his best, he would only be a squad player.

Cascarino told TalkSPORT: “If you’re talking about international football there hasn’t been a rise because he went to Qatar and he didn’t play a minute, he wasn’t selected for the Euros, he’s played seven times for England and he hasn’t scored a goal.

“James is a very gifted footballer. Technically, we know what he can do. He can pick a pass. But at best, I think he might make a squad but I don’t see much more than that.

“I think there are a lot of unanswered questions about whether he can break through into being a regular, I just don’t see that.

When discussing the depth England have in the number 10 role, Cascarino added that even in other positions he would be far down the pecking order.

“Antony Gordon plays on left, we’re saying play him on the left, Jack Grealish can play there, Phil Foden played that position – so it feels like he’s fourth choice in nearly everything. I just don’t see James’ international career ever getting going,” he said.

Maddison’s good start to the season

Maddison has made a good start to the new Premier League campaign registering two assists from the opening two matches.

He looked a real threat against Leicester as he set up Pedro Porro’s goal and was key in Spurs’ 4-0 win over Everton.

But it’s in the big matches where he will need to step up, as against Newcastle United he looked a bit lost at times.

Maddison will be given a massive opportunity to do that when Tottenham face Arsenal in the North London derby on September 15.
