Tottenham Hotspur will face Aston Villa this Sunday and referee Chris Kavanagh has been appointed to oversee the clash.

A huge top four battle will be taking place at Villa Park on the weekend in what could be the biggest game yet for Ange Postecoglou.

However, there may be some frustration from some surrounding who will be the man with the whistle for the game.

Five points separate the two sides going into the weekend making this a fixture with an awful lot riding on it.

So far this season, Spurs have only been overseen by the 38-year-old on one occasion which came back in December in their game against Newcastle United.

Spurs won the game comfortably and were even awarded a penalty which Heung-min Son dispatched.

Kavanagh has become one of the regular faces in the Premier League having already officiated 14 games this term with 64 yellow cards and seven penalties awarded.

This is a fixture which has provided some crunching tackles in recent years, so it will likely need a referee who can keep control the game. Kavanagh was the Premier League’s appointment.

What Jurgen Klopp said about Kavanagh

Liverpool recently got their hands on the Carabao Cup last month after beating Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea.

In charge of that game was Kavanagh, and it is fair to say Klopp was not impressed by his performance.

The game went to extra-time and the 38-year-old had shown seven yellow cards by the time the full-time whistle was blown.

After the game, despite tasting victory, Klopp slammed Kavanagh’s display. He said: “We had a ref who was not up to the level of the game. He didn’t help one team or the other, it was just like, ‘huh’. Really no common sense again for refs.”

Spurs will be going into this game on Sunday with three points feeling like a must.

The last thing Postecoglou will want to see is the game being decided by a poor referee call.

Postecoglou’s project is a long-term vision and qualifying for the Champions League would exceed the expectations of many.

But no one wants to see the points decided by a poor display from the officials.
