One person who knows Tottenham Hotspur target Malick Fofana extremely well is Manchester City star Rayan Cherki.

Cherki and Fofana played alongside each other at Lyon before the former’s move to Tottenham‘s English rivals during the summer.

Spurs and several other Premier League clubs were linked with Fofana when the transfer window was still open, but the winger remained in France in the end.

If he does eventually move to English football’s top division, though, Cherki is likely to tip him to succeed there.

Rayan Cherki on Malick Fofana’s explosiveness

There is no guarantee that Tottenham will sign Fofana in the new year, especially with the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool showing interest in the 20-year-old in the previous transfer window.

However, if the Europa League winners do, they will be getting a wide man who is explosive on the pitch, according to Cherki.

Speaking about Fofana in a press conference last season, which was shared by Foot Mercato, Cherki said: “Malick Fofana? I like everything about him. He’s good, kind, not very handsome (laughs), but we don’t care. He brings us his explosiveness.

“We tell him to go into spaces because we can give him the ball and he can hurt. He’s integrated well and isn’t afraid of much.”

The Belgian’s stats during the 2024/25 campaign were respectable for a 20-year-old. In 29 Ligue 1 appearances, he scored five goals and provided four assists.

Fofana may not be the only player who moves to Spurs in January. It has been claimed that Tottenham will scout Jan Paul van Hecke ahead of the next transfer window.

Tottenham could make move for Malick Fofana in January

Still having interest in Fofana, a Tottenham bid for the Belgium international looks possible.

In fact, according to CaughtOffside, there is an expectation that Spurs will make a move for Fofana when the transfer window reopens.

After losing club legend Son Heung-min in the summer, Tottenham supporters are unlikely to say no to the arrival of a new left winger.

Brennan Johnson does chip in with goals when he is in the side, while new signing Xavi Simons can also play on the left. But Fofana could be a good addition to Thomas Frank’s team, especially if he brings the explosiveness that Cherki has mentioned.
