Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma has been singled out for criticism for what he did against Wolves on the weekend.

It was an afternoon to forget at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday as Wolves were able to take all three points back to Molineux.

And it was an afternoon which Yves Bissouma may need to look back and learn from after one of his costly mistakes was picked up on.

Bissouma returns to starting XI

It had been around two months since we had seen the midfielder in the starting XI under Ange Postecoglou due to his suspension and Africa Cup of Nations duty.

And the Mali midfielder had a big part to play in Wolves’ second of the afternoon as he was caught on the ball before Pedro Neto ran through to provide Joao Gomes with the assist.

It was a moment which did not go unnoticed as journalist Alasdair Gold said on the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham podcast about the 27-year-old’s poor efforts to track back on the counter attack: ‘Unfortunately for the second goal, you’re looking at Yves Bissouma,’ he said.

‘You know, Bissouma lost the ball and his tracking back was just painful to watch. It was almost like ‘I might get there’. Then he got there and he didn’t really put himself into it.’

Midfield competition

Thankfully for Postecoglou, he has two weeks before our next game against Crystal Palace to rectify the problems which were seen during the defeat to Wolves.

And it is not like the Australian has the injury crisis in midfield that he did earlier in the term.

If he feels the Bissouma’s poor efforts are worthy of him losing his spot in the side, he will have Rodrigo Bentancur eager to return to the starting XI.

The Uruguayan has already discussed his struggles in returning to match fitness following his two recent injuries.

Not having a game this weekend may not help his case, but he will have some time at Hotspur Way to work on his fitness.

We saw the best of the £25m Bissouma under Postecoglou in the early stages of the campaign, it is now time for him to rediscover that form after a turbulent few months.
