’Not scared of anyone’… Micky van de Ven claims £42m Tottenham star is ‘world-class’ now

Micky van de Ven has labelled his Tottenham Hotspur teammate Cristian Romero as a ‘world-class’ defender.

The duo have struck up a brilliant understanding already this season after Micky van de Ven joined from Wolfsburg last summer.

Van de Ven seems to have brought the best out of Cristian Romero, with the Argentine putting in more composed displays this season.

Barring his reckless red card against Chelsea back in November, the 25-year-old has stepped up after being named as Tottenham’s vice-captain over the summer.

Van de Ven says Romero is ‘world-class’

Speaking to Optus Sport, Van de Ven lauded Romero and claimed his defensive partner has helped him out massively during the early stages of his Spurs career.

“For me, Romero is world-class,” he said. “Of course, as you say, he won the world championship. But how you see him on the pitch, he’s a leader.

“He wants to take the team and he’s always 100 per cent. Sometimes people see that he’s a bit too aggressive.

“He’s top-class on the ball and without the ball, defending. I can promise you this guy is not scared of anyone. He keeps going every game. And from the start, he was helping me.”

Despite some concerns over the £42 million man’s disciplinary record, Romero is yet to pick up a booking since the turn of the year.

When he’s at his best and avoiding making needless challenges, there’s no doubt he’s among the best defenders in the Premier League.

Romero is understandably a fan-favourite too and that feeling will have only been strengthened after he kissed the Spurs badge following his goal against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

We seem to have found an excellent partnership in Van de Ven and Romero, something we have been lacking since Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.

While there are some flaws to Romero’s game at times, Van de Ven compliments the World Cup winner perfectly and we’re excited to see how their partnership develops under Ange Postecoglou’s guidance.
