Micah Richards has urged Gareth Southgate to start James Maddison in England’s Euros qualifier against Italy tomorrow night.

Richards has been speaking on The Rest Is Football and feels the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder should be given the nod once again.

Maddison has been in exceptional form for Spurs this season after making the £40 million switch to North London from Leicester City over the summer.

The 26-year-old has quickly established himself as a key man under Ange Postecoglou, racking up seven goal involvements in eight Premier League appearances.

His encouraging form for Tottenham has helped him keep his place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad and the midfielder started from the off against Australia on Friday.

And while Maddison didn’t enjoy his best evening in a make-shift England side, Richards would like to see him start once again tomorrow night.

Richards urges Southgate to start Maddison

Speaking on The Rest Is Football, Richards singled out Maddison for praise and admitted he wants to see him keep his place in the England side.

“I’d love to see Maddison again,” he said. “I think he’s outstanding in that number 10 role.

“I don’t think he had his best game the other day. They could play him off the left though [if Bellingham starts at 10].”

Maddison struggled to make a real impact in the game against Australia. But England weren’t at their best on the night and the team was largely made up of players who haven’t played together frequently.

We’d like to see Maddison get an opportunity to shine in his favoured position tomorrow night, alongside Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice in midfield.
