Mauricio Pochettino believes that Tottenham Hotspur have more than enough quality to remain in the Premier League and avoid relegation.
Pochettino’s chances of becoming the next Spurs manager seem to have dramatically changed with Tottenham closing in on the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi.
🗣️ Spurs fans, who would you prefer as YOUR next manager: Mauricio Pochettino or Roberto De Zerbi?
De Zerbi and Pochettino were Spurs’ two dream managerial appointments, and it is the Italian who looks set to be given the reins at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Now, the Argentine coach has been speaking about his former club, assessing their odds of survival and his chances of making a return.
Mauricio Pochettino backs Tottenham to avoid relegation
Mauricio Pochettino is backing Tottenham Hotspur to avoid relegation, regardless of who is the next manager of the club.
The 56-year-old has been strongly linked with a return to N17; however, his commitment to the United States has stopped him from taking the job.
During his latest press conference, the former Spurs boss claims that despite the club being in a difficult moment, they do have enough to beat the drop.
Pochettino told Ben Jacobs: “Yes, they can stay up. Of course, it’s a difficult time, but they have the capacity to win, with or without a new coach.”
🔮 How many points will Roberto De Zerbi take from his first five matches at Spurs?
De Zerbi looks set to be the manager tasked with keeping Tottenham in the Premier League for the final seven matches.
If the Italian does manage to pull off the great escape, it means that the return of Pochettino in the summer after the World Cup would be highly unlikely.
Mauricio Pochettino shuts down links to Tottenham
During the same interview, Pochettino also moved to shut down links to Tottenham and Real Madrid following constant talk around a move.
He added: “No talks. We are very, very focused here on the World Cup. Everyone knows that I have a commitment to the national team here.
“It’s not the point to talk about the future. No one approached me. But who knows what is going to happen? By the way, we are open [to staying with the USMNT], why not if the federation is happy?”
Pochettino and the USA lost 5-2 to Belgium over the weekend, which may raise some alarm bells ahead of this summer’s tournament.
