‘Make an adjustment’… Martin Keown issues Ange Postecoglou advice after what he’s noticed from Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has been issued some advice by TalkSPORT’s Martin Keown.

Spurs are heading into the weekend sitting just five points off the top four and with a game in hand on Aston Villa.

However, Ange Postecoglou has now been told by the former Arsenal defender what he could do to improve the results.

Keown issues Postecoglou advice

Tottenham have had a two week break from action with their last outing one they will want to forget against Wolves.

In front of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium crowd, the Lilywhites were caught on the counter attack and Wolves sealed a second-half winner.

And Keown has now explained his wish to see Postecoglou hold his players back slightly when they are winning games.

The defensive record at Spurs has been fairly poor this season and it could be put down to the side’s philosophy of all-out attack.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Keown said: ‘I mean the thing is that they are only five points behind [Aston Villa] and I do feel that the way they play their football now is quite transformational.

‘But I would like to see a little bit of a handbrake go on when they’re winning games. They’re losing games trying to win them. And I think that the manager just needs to make an adjustment because they’re following him. Hook, line and sinker they’re going right after the win.

‘I just think they need to manage games a little bit better. And you even see Man City do this. You see all the [top teams], you see Liverpool do it. You have to manage when you’re in a winning situation you have to manage it through to the final whistle.’

Tottenham’s defensive record

Although he may be an ex-Arsenal player, Keown may well have a point.

There has to be some explanation behind the dreadful defensive record which Spurs have been unable to shake off in recent months.

Going into the game against Palace on the weekend, Spurs have only been able to keep one clean sheet in their last 16 league games.

There is no doubt the attacking side of Postecoglou’s Tottenham has shown a lot of promise, but work must be done on the defensive side.

Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have formed a solid partnership at the back. However, something must change to increase the number of clean sheets.

But that could well come with time as Postecoglou’s time at Spurs develops.
