James Maddison reveals what he would have done to keep Harry Kane at Tottenham

James Maddison has settled in fantastically at Tottenham Hotspur since his arrival in the summer.

Before his injury, the 27-year-old midfielder was arguably the best player in the Premier League. Since his absence, Ange Postecoglou‘s first-team squad have picked up just one point from four games.

He appears to be the new star man around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, filling the void of English stardom left by Harry Kane.

The pair did link up together at Tottenham in pre-season off the pitch, which Maddison reflected on recently.

James Maddison told Amazon Prime what it was like not only stealing the limelight from Kane at Spurs but also taking his shirt number in the process:

“It all happened so quick,” he began. “Me and H had a bit of banter to be fair. I was wearing No71 in pre-season, I was getting a bit of stick.

“We wanted to see and weigh up which number I was going to wear, who leaves. There was a bit of banter ‘Oh Madders are you waiting for Harry to go?’ in the changing room and I would have stayed 71 believe me, to keep him.

“Harry left on the eve of the first game. The club wanted me to have No10 because it’s such a big number and it’s quite an iconic number for shirt sales and stuff and I’m never going to say no, I love that pressure and I love the No10.”

What could have been for Maddison and Kane…

It would have been ace to see these two link up, at least once in the Premier League.

You can’t help but think their play styles would have complimented each other perfectly. Maddison can thread the eye of a needle with a pass, while Kane adopts positions that are simply a dream for an attacking midfielder.

Kane won’t be too disheartened with the sheer plethora of talent feeding him at Munich, but it would’ve been a great site to see for the English top flight in general.
