Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr’s father has recently spoken out about his son’s decision to join Spurs.

The Senegalese youngster has now earned a regular spot in Ange Postecoglou’s starting XI since the Australian’s arrival.

However, his father has now discussed some of the difficulties the 21-year-old has endured since leaving Metz.

Pape Matar Sarr struggles at Spurs

It was a difficult spell for the Senegal midfielder last season under Antonio Conte. He was handed an opportunity at the San Siro then struggled to return to the XI.

It has been a completely different story under the Australian with Sarr having racked up 18 starts in the Premier League alone this term.

But his father has now spoken out about the struggles his son came across when leaving Metz to join the north London club.

He told Senegalese outlet Wiw Sport: “I encourage him and congratulate him, while continuing to pray for him, because it wasn’t easy when he left Metz for Tottenham. As a parent and former sportsman, I give him advice, and now we can see the season he is having. It’s possible that the patience he showed last year helped put him where he is today. What’s more, he has the trust of his new coach.”

“I tell myself that Pape hasn’t yet shown his true worth; he still has a lot of room for improvement, and God has put him on the right track. So my advice to him is not to be in too much of a hurry. Football is difficult, and fortunately he hasn’t jumped the gun. He went through the youth teams and then the Senegal first team. All we ask is that he doesn’t get ahead of himself.”

Pape Matar Sarr injury news

Although Sarr has been a regular in the starting XI this season, he didn’t make the cut on Saturday against Crystal Palace.

The youngster came on towards the end of the game and was spotted struggling following the full-time whistle.

After the game, Postecoglou admitted the midfielder is carrying a slight back issue which is limiting him.

But it is clear those at Spurs are happy with him after Daniel Levy handed him a new deal to extend his stay until 2030.

Spurs have a lot of options in midfield with Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur and James Maddison the three to start on Saturday.

Sarr has been an important player this season, but potentially making his issue worse is not worth the risk when Postecoglou has quality options to play in his place.
