I’m one of Ange Postecoglou’s best signings at Tottenham – and I’ve fell in love with his style of play

Micky van de Ven has proven himself to be the perfect defender for Ange Ball given his unbelievable recovery speed and ability on the ball.

The Dutch defender took no time at all to fit in at Tottenham Hotspur and after just over a year at the club, he is already seen as one of the Premier League’s best defenders.

Van de Ven’s speed is exceptional and ranks him as the fastest-recorded player in the league having hit a top speed of 37.12km/h this season.

Such pace allows for Potecoglou to play his high-line football as the 23-year-old is able to catch up with most attackers when they find themselves beyond Spurs’ back line.

Now, the central defender has given his honest thoughts on Ange Ball and whether he actually enjoys playing such risky football.

Micky van de Ven on playing Ange Ball

Van de Ven has revealed that he loves playing in Postecoglou’s high line and being part of such an offensive Tottenham team. The Dutch international admits he enjoys the challenge of having plenty of space behind him to make recovery runs and really utilise his speed.

He also explained the importance of a high line to this Spurs team who want to press far up the pitch, as it limits the space between the attack and defence.

Speaking ahead of the clash with AZ Alkmaar, Van de Ven told the media: “I really enjoy it because I have the speed also to recover a lot of big spaces. I also really enjoy the offensive football we play.

“With a high pressing team, I think if you want to play a high press, you need a high line because otherwise the distance between the attackers and the defence is going to be too big. So I really enough playing this high line and this offensive football.”

Where does Van de Ven rank in Postecoglou’s best Tottenham signings

Van de Ven probably has to be ranked as Postecoglou’s best signing whilst at Tottenham with the defender slotting into his team with ease.

The Australian’s hit record in North London has been pretty solid with very few of his signings proving to be disappointments.

From a list of Van de Ven, James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, Guglielmo Vicario, Radu Dragusin, Dominic Solanke, Alejo Veliz, Ashley Phillips, Manor Solomon, Timo Werner, Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert, it’s hard to argue he’s signed many flops.

Veliz, Solomon and Timo Werner are probably the only underwhelming additions but all three were brought in on low-risk deals.
