Ian Wright has urged Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy to back Ange Postecoglou in the January transfer window.

Speaking on the Kelly and Wrighty Show, the Arsenal legend explained why he thinks it’s the right time for Daniel Levy to invest heavily in the squad.

It’s been a difficult week for Ange Postecoglou as he’s suffered back-to-back defeats in the Premier League.

Tottenham were flying high at the top of the table before suffering a 4-1 defeat to Chelsea followed by a 2-1 loss at Wolves.

Yet, the results don’t tell half the story as Postecoglou’s squad has been hit with significant injuries and suspensions.

Indeed, James Maddison, Micky van de Ven and Richarlison are all set for spells on the sidelines.

Destiny Udogie is set to return for the clash against Aston Villa following his sending-off against Chelsea, but Cristian Romero remains suspended.

The injuries to Van de Ven and Maddison, in particular, have left Tottenham in desperate need of reinforcements in January.

And Ian Wright believes Daniel Levy simply has to back Postecoglou in the upcoming transfer window.

Wright urges Daniel Levy to do one thing at Tottenham

Wright believes Levy must avoid repeating the mistake he made with former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino by bringing in some quality players for Postecoglou.

“I think Levy this January more than any other time, and I know it’s very difficult to get really top-end players, he really does have to back Ange with some players,” Wright said.

“What he doesn’t want to get into is what he did with Poch, after the Champions League and them finishing second, he wanted to get some out and bring some in and he ended up moving on.

“Tottenham regressed, with Conte and then Mourinho. Ange is bringing them back, he needs to be backed.”

It’s hard to disagree with Wright’s assessments on Levy’s past failures and it feels absolutely vital he backs Postecoglou in January.

Tottenham are already paying the price for failing to bring in another option at centre-back due to Van de Ven’s hamstring injury.

While it will take more than just one transfer window to shape the squad in Postecoglou’s image, the back-up options at Tottenham just aren’t at the required standard at the moment.
