This may well go down as the very worst season in Tottenham Hotspur’s history.
Spurs are staring a relegation battle in the face, and while Tottenham will be confident of avoiding the drop, based on recent form, you’d be a fool to say relegation is impossible.
After years of calling for Daniel Levy to leave the club, many Spurs fans got their wish this summer.
Levy departed in September, and in his absence, Vinai Venkatesham has become a more powerful figure at Spurs in his role as CEO.
True or false: Daniel Levy was far from the biggest problem at Tottenham?
However, it’s been a disastrous start to life at Spurs for Venkatesham, and many questions are being raised.
Speaking on The Tottenham Way Podcast, Tom Barclay shared some insight into how Venkatesham is viewed by ENIC now.
Lewis family still have faith in Vinai Venkatesham
According to Barclay, the Lewis family – the owners of Tottenham Hotspur, still have a lot of faith in Vinai Venkatesham to get things right.
Apparently, the plan remains the same at Spurs, but they have had to take a little detour based on how poor Thomas Frank proved to be.
“They wanted to stick with this long-term solution. They still very much respect Frank, and they will hope to go back to that. I’m told that there’s still very much faith in Vinai from the Lewis family side of things,” Barclay said.
“So, it’s not like they’re planning on ripping up the whole thing all over it. It’s just they were forced to do this one because they could see it just wasn’t working. Results were too bad, and the fans’ relationship wasn’t good enough.”
Vinai Venkatesham had a slow start at Arsenal
Vinai Venkatesham is coming under a lot of fire at the moment, but it may be worth remembering that this is a man who has been in this situation before.
Venkatesham became the Managing Director at Arsenal in 2018 after the departure of Ivan Gazidis, and he did have some tough times towards the beginning of his life at Arsenal.
Mikel Arteta, similarly, had Arsenal contemplating relegation at one point in late 2020, but, after being given time and investment he’s turned things around and Arsenal are now on the up again, much to the angst of Spurs fans.
Patience is hard to come by in football, but there is a reason Venkatesham is trusted by the Lewis family and performed well in his role at Arsenal.
