‘Extraordinary’… Manager wowed by Tottenham loanee who Ange Postecoglou never started

Tottenham Hotspur loanee Alejo Veliz has been described as extraordinary by his manager in Sevilla following his first week of training.

Having departed north London in January on a short-term loan deal, Veliz arrived in Spain still carrying an injury he picked up during his time at Spurs.

However, he has now been included in the 23-man squad by Quique Sanchez Flores for their upcoming game against Valencia on Saturday.

Veliz praised by Flores

Having signed in the summer, the Argentine striker has struggled to make any real impression at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium under Ange Postecoglou.

He had only been able to earn himself eight appearances in the Premier League – all coming from the bench – which had returned a total of just 42 minutes.

Despite his cameo performances, he has been able to find the back of the net in the away defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

But it seems he is already impressing out on loan with Sevilla despite arriving with an injury issue, ahead of Saturday’s game Flores said: “He’s completed an extraordinary week with the group, he has desire, hunger, enthusiasm.

“He does what we ask of him. He’s a boy who is going to mark a clear path of what the team needs again.”

Veliz’s Tottenham future

It is far too early to say whether Veliz is a player who has a long-term future ahead of him at Hotspur Way, but the standard has been set with the recent form shown by Richarlison.

It would be completely unrealistic to expect a youngster to arrive in a new country, hit the ground running and compete on that level from the go.

So, the move to Sevilla could offer Postecoglou a great opportunity to see what Veliz can do if he is to get more regular game time.

The 20-year-old has already spoken about Erik Lamela’s warm welcome to Seville and now he is getting a glowing review from his manager.

A loan move to Spain may not provide the best idea of what Veliz could be capable of in the Premier League, however, minutes – and hopefully goals – under his belt will do him the world of good.
